To start, I will admit that I am a massive fan of the Halo franchise, but I can honestly say to anyone, regardless of their previous experience of the Halo games , that Halo 3 ODST is a fantastic Xbox 360 game that any fan of the FPS genre should experience.
Halo 3 ODST puts you in the boots of an Orbital Drop Shock Trooper, the Halo universe's equivalent of the SAS or the Royal Commandos. Where Master Chief (protagonist of the previous Halo games) is arguably superhuman in stature and ability, the ODSTs are less so; they cannot dual wield weapons, they don't have recharging energy shields and perhaps the most game altering change; they do not have automatically regenerating health.
The campaign mode takes a different direction from the Halo games of the past, taking an open-world approach to progression, rather than the linear level progression of the past. Through the campaign mode you play as 'The Rookie,' who regains consciousness 6 hours after the squad's insertion via drop pod into the city of New Mombasa, and your job is to find out what happened to the rest of your squad through playable flashbacks.
The night-time sections of the game have a vastly different feel to the flashbacks parts of the game, which are classic Halo - lots of action and lots of fun. The night-time section is far more stealth oriented, with patrols of covenant troops hindering your progress. The combat also takes on a different angle at night, ammo is scarce, you're on your own and significantly outnumbered.
Halo 3 ODST also introduces 'Firefight,' a non-competitive multiplayer mode putting you and up to three others against unending waves of covenant troops; much like Horde mode in GOW:2. In Firefight you have a shared pool of lives, and if they run out its game over. I wont go into the intricacies of the game-play, but it is easy to say the Firefight is highly enjoyable and will keep you coming back again and again.
As well as the Campaign and Firefight, ODST contains the 'Halo 3 Complete Multiplayer Experience.' including all released multiplayer content from Halo 3. Also, owning ODST is your key to the public beta of the recently announced Halo: Reach
All in all, Halo 3: ODST is a great addition to the Halo franchise, with solid Halo game-play, and the new Firefight mode. With the Halo 3 Multiplayer content and Halo: Reach Beta access, ODST is not a game to be missed!
